But not too pressed that I did not arrange a book tour (two, actually).

To be a self-published author is to languish until you pivot from comfort. You really want to shop around for the best services with good track records. I had a fun run this past week with Love Book Tour and Pump Up Your Book Tour.

For many reasons, the latter wasn’t exactly as I hoped, but I ended up with a good mix of physical book reviewers and press tours, which is really something with all the great feedback that I have been getting on the book. I’m also up to arms marketing the book on Threads and YouTube, as well as other social media platforms. It’s not the easiest thing to do, pushing out your own book, especially when you are a 22-year-old that dashes between research papers and novel manuscripts.

But it’s been fun really, doing these new things.

Shape of the Sun is officially out on all platforms, as many of you know. It is the product of writing every day for 7-8 months and the support of 4.8k Wattpad readers that commented day in and out.

For as long as I can remember, community has always been part of my writing journey. And that is why I decided to start this newsletter.

I am student-author (yes that comes first!), but it is also in the sense that I am a ‘student-author’ - still growing and refining my craft. As I write research papers on how to improve healthcare services in low-income communities, I am also on Pinterest for a mood board of a new male lead or writing notes for scenes for a book that I have planned.

This newsletter provides an opportunity for me to put out thoughts that I have always had about fiction, but it is also a place where you get an inner perspective of any work that I put out, can regularly give feedback on any work via the chats, and have an opportunity to be an ARC reader as well as have a character feature in a future book.

As is, I am currently revising a novel that I wrote almost 10 years ago. It was my debut actually. There is a free version online that you can read until this is ready (you’ll see why there). Don’t be worried because Paula doesn’t do things in half-measures.

It promises to be excellent, I hope.

Now back to Shape of the Sun, this book is essentially a product of understandings I came to have about a lot of writing. Especially Male Leads, the capital ML.

I think that many of them are traditionally white-washed in real-time, in the ways that readers are meant to inherently meant to presume innocence where there is none. I figured over time I like writing complex characters, and that includes rich and morally gray ones. Especially if they have the trappings of a human and the face of a saint.

I think that was why most of the characters in this book are rich. The idea was not to sure struggle against a system, but struggle against thriving within that system. That might be a different perspective, but it is also very real in a world with 8 billion people.

Now, now I have talked a big talk - and I hope it sticks - but you might end up reading SOTS and it might not. I appreciate reviews and this Substack also presents an opportunity to provide genuine feedback, because there is always room for growth and refinement in an author. Especially in an author.
